Why is Holika celebrated
Holika Dahan, also known as Holika Puja or Chhoti Holi, is celebrated primarily in North India and Nepal. It takes place on the night before Holi, the festival of colors. The tradition of Holika Dahan has deep-rooted significance in Hindu mythology and culture.
The legend behind Holika Dahan dates back to ancient times and revolves around the story of Prahlad, the young son of demon king Hiranyakashipu. Hiranyakashipu, due to his ego and arrogance, considered himself to be the supreme ruler and demanded everyone to worship him as a god. However, Prahlad remained devoted to Lord Vishnu, much to his father’s dismay.
Unable to change Prahlad’s devotion to Vishnu, Hiranyakashipu sought to eliminate him. He enlisted the help of his sister, Holika, who was immune to fire. Holika sat on a pyre with Prahlad on her lap, intending for Prahlad to burn while she remained unharmed. However, due to Prahlad’s unwavering devotion and the protection of Vishnu, Holika was consumed by the fire while Prahlad emerged unscathed. This event symbolizes the victory of good over evil, faith over arrogance, and righteousness over wickedness. Holika Dahan, therefore, commemorates this triumph by burning effigies of Holika on a bonfire.
People gather around the bonfire, sing religious hymns, and pray for the eradication of evil from their lives. It is believed that the ashes from the bonfire have purifying properties and can ward off evil spirits.
In addition to its mythological significance, Holika Dahan also marks the arrival of spring and the beginning of the Holi festivities. It is a time of joy, celebration, and renewal, as people come together to play with colors, exchange sweets, and strengthen bonds of friendship and community.
Overall, Holika Dahan is celebrated to honor the victory of good over evil, protect against negative energies, and usher in a season of happiness, prosperity, and spiritual growth.
