Road Transport
India’s road network of approximately 54.83 lakh kilometers is the second largest road network in the world which includes national highways, state highways and other roads.
1. National Highway: The responsibility of its construction, management and maintenance is taken up by the Government of India. These are controlled by the Central Public Works Department. This is about 1.9% of the total length of roads in the entire country, which provides about 40% of the road transport traffic.
At present the longest national highway of India is- NH-44. The old name of this highway was NH-7. This highway runs from the north of India (Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir) to the southern end of India (Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu). The length of this national highway is 3745 km. Are. This highway starts from Jammu and Kashmir and ends in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh. M.P. Passes through Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka and reaches Tamil Nadu. NH-1A Srinagar to Punjab. NH-1 Punjab Haryana to Delhi. NH-2 Delhi to Agra. NH-3 from Agra to Gwalior. NH-75 and NH-26 from Gwalior to Jhansi, NH-7 from Jhansi to Nagpur, Nizamabad, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Madurai to Kanyakumari. National Highway No. 1 and 2 are collectively called Grand Trunk Road (G.T. Road). Note: Zero Mile Stone was established by the British in Nagpur, which is used to measure all distances.
Jawahar Tunnel is located on National Highway No. 1A. This highway goes from Jalandhar to Uri via Jammu and Srinagar. Jawahar Tunnel is situated in Banihal Pass connecting Jammu and Srinagar. Located on Jammu and Srinagar National Highway (NH44) 9.2 km. The long Chenani-Nashri tunnel is the longest road tunnel in the country. It is the longest bi-directional highway tunnel in Asia. India’s longest cable bridge is over the Narmada River in Bharuch district of Gujarat state, which has been constructed to ease the traffic on the Ahmedabad-Mumbai section of National Highway-8.
The shortest National Highway of India is 47-A (length 6km). It is located in Wellington Island located in Bembanad Lake, Kerala. National Highway-15 passes through the desert of Rajasthan. The order of cities connected to it is – Pathankot-Amritsar-Bhatinda-Ganganagar-Bikaner-Jaisalmer-Barmer Samakhiyali. 5846 km under the Golden Quadrilateral Scheme. Four metropolitan cities Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata were connected by a long national highway.

Srinagar was connected to Kanyakumari through the North-South Corridor built under the National Highway Development Program and Silchar was connected to Porbandar through the East-West Corridor. Its total length is 7,522 (Source: India-2015) km.
2. State Highway: Its construction and maintenance is the responsibility of the state government. The length of state highways is currently 176,166 km. Is. (Source: India-2015). The highest density of roads in India is in Kerala (5,268.69 km per 1,000 sq. km of area) and the lowest in Jammu and Kashmir. Delhi has the highest road density among the Union Territories (19,931.89 km per 1,000 sq. km area). (2nd place Chandigarh) Maharashtra ranks first in the length of roadways among the states. To promote private participation in the road construction sector, the government adopted the policy of “Build, Operate and Transfer” (B.O.T.). About 65% of freight transport and 80% of passenger transport takes place by roads.
